You’ve probably heard about the hype around the Delta emulator’s release on the App Store. And since it’s free, you might have downloaded it too. Maybe you remembered that you’ve got some old Game Boy cartridges lying around somewhere, gathering dust. Or perhaps, like me, you splurged on second-hand video games during the COVID lockdown. But no matter where your Game Boy cartridges came from, I’m here to show you an easy way to revive those games. I’ll help you bring them, along with your save files, to your iPhone.

To back up and bring those games to Delta, go to Playback’s Data tab and hit Start. For a game like Spanky’s Quest, the backup is almost instant, creating a tiny 66KB file. That’s right, just 66 kilobytes! It’s pretty wild to think about in 2024. When was the last time you enjoyed something that small?

Playback also lets you copy any game save data stored on a cartridge. That’s how Federico was able to pick up Final Fantasy Tactics Advance after leaving it untouched for over two decades. Pretty impressive, right?

How to Load GB Games on iPhone/iPad:

  1. Transfer Files to iPhone:
    • Use AirDrop to send the game files, such as Spanky’s Quest, to your iPhone or directly download in iphone.
    • Open Delta on your iPhone and add the game from your Downloads folder.
  2. Save Game Files to iCloud Drive:
    • Save game files to iCloud Drive on your Mac.
    • They will automatically sync and appear on your iPhone.
  3. Add Files to Delta:
    • In Delta, navigate to your games using the same system as the Files app.
    • Adding games is simple and straightforward.
  4. Import and Export Save Data:
    • Long-press on a game in Delta to import saved data.
    • You can also export and save files in the same way.

As I’m writing this, Delta is currently the number one free app on the App Store in the U.S. That’s pretty amazing for an app that just launched yesterday. It shows there’s a huge demand for retro gaming on the iPhone, and Delta’s quality speaks for itself. While iOS still has a way to go before it catches up to other platforms in terms of available emulators, Delta is a great starting point.
